Make the Holidays Your Own

As kids, our lives are at the mercy of our caregivers. While most youngsters are raised in semi-healthy environments, unfortunately, a lot of adult littles had a tough upbringing.

For instance, our very own little, ZaciRoo was reared in a strict, religious household, where he was told that Halloween was all about devil worship and that it was evil. As a child, little Zac just wanted to dress up and hunt for candy, like all of his friends. He had no interest in religious significance or grown-up philosophies. Zac just wanted mini Reece's cups!

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, when we were shopping for Halloween decorations, we quickly learned that his upbringing had a particularly interesting impact on him today. While he wanted to get excited at all of the fun & spooky costumes and various ominous furnishings, instead he became incredibly uncomfortable.

He didn't know how to react or engage with anything. He'd been taught for so long that Halloween was BAD and wrong, he didn't know how to relate to it now. He felt like an actor in a play, pretending to be the character who loves Halloween. Because he had never been able to fully experience the holiday, he didn't know how he felt about it.

We've done a lot of talking since then. We've been exploring the idea of scrapping all of the baggage that comes from childhood and embracing life and taking responsibility in making it WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE.

What does that mean?

It means that, even if you didn't dress up as a child for Halloween, or you were forced to go as characters you really didn't want to be, it's not too late!! DO IT NOW.

And if you're in a position where it's just not feasible (e.g. kidletts in the house), draw a picture of what you'd like to be! If you can't do that, just sit back, close your eyes... and imagine it. Our brains are incredibly powerful and even if you only have the ability to be your true self in your head, your body will react with endorphins and calming, feel-good hormones!

Also, do what Zac and I did! Make your own Halloween decorations!! He made this adorable little witchy Jigglypuff (did you notice the broom instead of the marker?) and I made magnets. Check out the video about it.

We've got the ability to make our lives, including the holidays, what we want them to be. Empower yourself and decorate, celebrate, live the way you want to.

Live your authentic little self!!

Sending much love,

Mommy Black
